History
The founder of Surprise was Homer C. Ludden who, in 1937, subdivided a square mile parcel of land into low-cost home sites for the local agricultural workers. He named it after his home town in Nebraska. Before this time, there was little in the area but a few small homes and a gas station. Here is a history page for Surprise.
